Dear Writers and Readers,
I am a new editor offering free editing and proofreading services. A few reasons:
As a writer myself, I understand how frustrating it is to look over your final draft only to spot one (or maybe two) pesky little errors you just didn’t catch in time
With all honesty, I am also looking for samples so as to build a reputable profile to show potential clients
I believe it’s something I’m good at.
I am willing to accept your work to edit under the following conditions:
To show future clients looking to hire an editor. As told on Ao3, presenting samples leaves a better impact and give editors a higher chance if they come from real writers — not AI, or whipping up something with Chat GPT.
Original works and blogposts only. For now. As much as I’d love to edit all your fanfictions mixed and baked with love, I’m certain I need to leave them out until further notice. There are fandoms that professional writers may not see as, well, professional.
Authors, no straight-up erotica please. This isn’t to kink-shame anyone, I’m simply not in the market for that genre specifically. If there is a very mild amount lightly sprinkled here and there, I can tweak it enough to make it work. I understand that spicy romance and romanticies are very popular, but for the time being they’re not what I’m looking for. Fluff, angst, hurt and comfort are absolutely welcome.
Authors, whump is debatable. Similar to the erotica condition above, I’m not in the market for straight-up violence. If that’s the whole theme of the work, I reserve the right to refuse. If there is some, I might be able to make it work. EX: rescue scenes, healing/caretaking scenes.
Up to 5,000 words. Typically, I’d love to be flexible and catch all the errors on projects 10k+ words long. For now, though, 5,000 is the maximum for samples.
I will identify you by your pen name if you want.
This is a free service! So, no payment required. I will save your works on my WPS Office files; they will be safe, and used for sample purposes only. If you want me to edit and proofread your work please email me at [email protected]. Thank you for your consideration!
Sincerely,
Alyssa

I have to rave about @dlbookediting's work!
I sent her over a copy of my upcoming book, Pride Before a Fall, for a final once-over before the ARC release. Dominique was incredibly thorough, even taking the time to double back and ensure that her comments were consistent. She even went ahead and read the first book, 9 Years Yearning, without prompting so that she was fully caught up.
What I especially appreciated about Dominique's comments was her ability to offer solutions that strengthen my voice rather than change it.
Her suggestions considered both my narrative vision and readers' needs. As writers, it's so easy for us to get caught up in what we want our text to look like without thinking of our readers, but Dominique seamlessly bridged the gap between my intention and an audience's experience.
I loved her reactions to the writing, as this is so helpful for knowing what potential readers may find intriguing. These small comments can be quite the ego boost, and I was glad that she sprinkled them in with her thoughtful critique.
She also caught inconsistencies that I hadn't even considered, explaining in depth while they may throw readers off without dictating what I could do. This is just one example of her methodical approach:
At times, I can get a bit too ornate and experimental, but Dominique gently brought me back down to earth, ensuring that I didn't leave my readers confused.
From her comments, I could tell that she had thoroughly pondered every single word and its total impact on the text. It's rare to find an editor with such a keen eye and a true appreciation for their client's work. Her work felt much like a dedicated seamstress gently mending any tears in a tapestry, ensuring it shines just as the creator intended.
I'm deeply grateful for her help in sprucing up Pride Before a Fall right in time for its ARC release, and I strongly encourage you giving her services a try!
You can also check out Dominique at @philosophika and read pieces of her novel-in-progress over at @thesorcerersapprentice!

I started a longfic about The Void Within plot from mostly the leaders's perspective!
Guess what the main ship is! It's Lord Darigan/King Roo, also known as DariRoo, or Rooigan.
It's a slow-burn, distaste-to-friends-to-lovers story in the midst of a thrilling, world-ending, bureaucratic emergency.
Official Summary:
When a void appears in the sky over Neopia, and Meridell is consumed by grey magic, world leaders are invited to gather in the ancient and fortified city-state of Altador to discuss strategy and to "foster international cooperation from every nation," as the fine print says. And they really meant every nation. And together they will figure out what kind of heroes the world needs, or fall trying.

got a promotional email from my university's WRITING CENTRE that made me absolutely irate but I printed it off and circled and corrected all the errors (there were 12 btw. in 18 sentences.) and I've calmed down a bit now
#and the irony is that anyone who would notice those errors wouldn't need their services#but the students who do might not even know if errors are being *introduced* into their work!!!#I neeeed to get back into my proofreading and editing course but I just don't have time :(((#corynn.txt

that's one fine-looking manuscript you've got there
tl;dr: if you've got a book in the works, I want to proofread and/or edit it; I'm good at what I do, and because I'm building a new business from the ground, my rates are on a sliding scale that will put a Slip'n'Slide to shame; message for deets; trust me, I'm more scared of you than you are of me.
This isn't a pitch. (Although I never could resist a douchey post title.) This is just me reaching out to fellow writeblrs, with a so-informal-I-had-to-blur-my-zoom-background offer/request.
If you have a manuscript in the works, I want to proofread and/or edit it. Maybe you're planning to self-publish, maybe you want to score a small press, maybe you want to pitch to agents. Heck, maybe you're book-binding a fic and want it to be as shiny as it gets! Whatever you're planning to do with your book and whatever your budget is, I want to help.
I'm starting my own business as an independent editor. It's something I've wanted to do for a very long time, and last week, my steady freelance writing gig of eight years folded in the scope of one afternoon due to corporate shenanigans (yay, capitalism!), and I figured: if I was looking for a sign, that was it.
I'm a good writer, and also a good editor. I have an eye for detail, an ear for language, and a butt for staying in the chair until the job is done. Also, thanks to my deep roots in fanfic, I've got a ton of skill points in characterization, voice and the ability to match a story's style and vibe.
I've been writing and editing my own and other people's work for the best part of 15 years now, but because a lot of it was ghostwriting, putting together a portfolio is going to take some time. Having an editor or proofreader credit on a handful of titles that are finished and out there would make a world of difference: which is why, if you take a chance on me at this so-early-it's-still-late stage, you'll get a very low price, very good service, and a fiercely loyal word wrangler on your side for years to come.
This is where I should sign off with an enthusiastic call to action. I've tried a bunch and deleted them all. I know you're supposed to project confidence at times like this, but I've written way too much marketing copy in my day, and being fake on the page makes me queasy. I like being honest, and the honest thing is, I'm trying something I've wanted to do for a long time, and I'm excited, and also scared. Starting a new thing is hard, but I know I can do a good job if a handful of people give me a chance. So if you're one of them, message me, and I will treat your words with the care that they deserve. I am a writer myself, after all. I know words are precious. I know stories matter. I want to help you tell yours.
Thank you. 💛

Unknowledge
'...their knowledge is... / Burnt. Rather burnt; more ash / than paper, their libraries.' This week, I've got an announcement and another fantasy poem, 'Unknowledge', for you - check them both out on my blog!
This week, we’re continuing the collection that I’ve been covering over the past few posts with my fantasy poems, expanding on this mysterious world in a somewhat interesting and perhaps meta way in this poem, ‘Unknowledge’. However, I do also have a small announcement – for about three years now, I’ve been offering beta reading and proofreading services through Fiverr, but the rather woeful…

Editing Available
Writers! Alas, my house has been hit with a multitude of car troubles beyond the comfortable capacity of my bank account. Please hire me. I have an MFA in Creative Writing and have been editing for 13 years now. I especially love working with science fiction and fantasy, but I am comfortable with a very wide range of genres.
Here's what I can do for the current low low rate of let me know what you need and what you can afford and we'll see what we can work out, because right now I am a little desperate:
Developmental Editing - I look at the big picture plot and character and story stuff. I read your manuscript through twice. The first time to just react and see where it's all going, and the second time to look for ways to fix any issues. ("This bit in Chapter 10 solves an issue I had in Chapter 1. Let's move some things around.") I will leave comments as I go, but also give you a write up fully explaining my thought process and suggestions. Once you've had time to read it over and think about it, I'm more than happy to talk you through it all and answer any questions via email or Discord voice or text chat. (I like text because then you've got everything written down.
Line Editing - All of your plot holes have been closed. All of your characters are acting in character. Now my favorite part, taking a closer look. At this level I will be going over word choices, dialogue, descriptions, and grammar. I use Chicago Manual of Style for my style guide and Merriam-Webster for my dictionary, but we can also work out anything specific to your work. The most important things, to me, about grammar are clarity and internal consistency. Again, I do two read throughs. On the first one I will catch all the standard stuff and make suggestions. But I will also make note of anything that may need to go in a style guide specific to your work. This is usually especially important in science fiction and fantasy works as you do worldbuilding. I will reach out about any decisions you need to make and then do a second read. You'll get back the edited manuscript as well as a style guide. Again, I will be available for a chat to answer any questions.
Proofreading - This is it. This is the last step of the writing and editing process. One last read through to catch any grammar* that might have slipped through the cracks, or new problems that may have been introduced. (Did you use find and replace all? You definitely need one more read through.)
I prefer to edit in Word, but can work in Google Docs if needed. You can contact me here on Tumblr, or through MoxieFurious at Gmail.
*One note on grammar. It can be subjective. Often the rules for English are more malleable than people think. This is where I fall back to clarity and internal consistency. It's also where having someone with a degree in writing comes in handy. I can recognize the difference between a sentence fragment for effect and a sentence fragment because you accidentally dropped a word. In fiction we play with the building blocks of writing, and that does not always directly adhere to the standards of academic English.

FREE* PROOFREADING!!
I'm a new-to-the-industry proofreader looking for samples to add to a portfolio for prospective clients. For this reason, I'm inviting work from writers who would benefit from free proofreading, with the following guidelines:
No smut - it's okay if there's a little spicy bit here and there, because I can edit it out to make it work for a professional context, but if the work is just straight up erotica, I can't use it. Not kinkshaming, it just isn't suitable for my purpose right now. This may change in the future because proofreading/editing for steamy romance is absolutely a thing, it's just not what I'm aiming for at this moment.
Intended for (or already) public publishing - I would like to be able to reference back to, for instance, the piece published on AO3 or someone's blog or in print. Sample pieces have more impact if they are demonstrably from a real writer and not just something I cooked up with chatgpt to make myself look good.
I may wish to "sanitize" overt fandom content - this is something I might do for a fandom that (sigh) doesn't strike people as professional (like some kind of extremely horny anime). This would be a step I would take only for my version of the document, and I would only do this with the permission of the writer. I know it doesn't feel good to have your work scrubbed of its context, but this would only be for the version shown in my portfolio. You will receive my proofreading services (a tracked edit or annotated document, your choice, with fandom content intact) just like everyone else, it's just for the version displayed in my portfolio I might (with your permission!) like to change character and place names to make it generic.
At least 1000 words - I am happy to do longer pieces up to 10k, though I would be choosing specific pages or excerpts for my portfolio. I'm flexible on this, honestly. I could go through a website to catch spelling and grammar problems on, for instance, a series of blog posts. I'd just like a given project to be worth the effort and yield something for my portfolio.
In English - I can wholeheartedly offer my services in US English! I can do my best with UK/AUS/NZ etc English, but I'm hesitant due to, y'know, wanting to make myself look good in my own portfolio. I'm not good enough in any other language to offer proofreading. Sorry!
Willing to be identified by at least your pen name - again, what makes these samples helpful for me is that I can demonstrate that they were real things published by real authors, even if just a username or pseudonym. All works must attributed to someone.
My upwork profile, which is where my portfolio will be housed, is here: https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~0110e1c5d1d446b2c8
This is a free service. You don't need to pay me or hire me on my Upwork profile, I'm just linking it for transparency about where your work will be displayed. If you'd like to tip, I can provide payment details when we talk.
If you'd like to get started, you can contact me here through DM or on discord as roziepamozie. Thank you for considering my services!

Why Is Legal Proofreading Important?
Precision and accuracy are paramount in the realm of law. Legal professionals handle crucial documents that can have far-reaching consequences for individuals, businesses, and society. Legal proofreading plays a critical role in ensuring the integrity and credibility of legal documents. This article delves into the significance of legal proofreading, its benefits, and the potential repercussions of overlooking this vital step.
1. Accuracy and clarity
Legal documents are complex, often containing intricate legal jargon and technical terms. One small error in these documents can change the entire meaning, leading to misunderstandings, disputes, or even legal battles. Legal proofreading helps to identify and rectify spelling mistakes, grammar errors, typographical blunders, and inconsistencies, ensuring the content is accurate and easily understandable to all parties involved.
2. Preserving legal integrity
Legal proofreading preserves the integrity of legal documents and ensures that they comply with the applicable laws, regulations, and standards. By meticulously reviewing legal contracts, agreements, court pleadings, and other documents, lawyers and legal professionals can avoid discrepancies and inaccuracies that could jeopardize the legitimacy and enforceability of the documents.
3. Avoiding costly mistakes
The legal arena is not immune to the consequences of errors. A misplaced comma or a misinterpreted clause can lead to costly litigations, contract disputes, and other legal troubles. Legal proofreading acts as a safeguard against these potential pitfalls, reducing the risk of errors and the need for time-consuming and expensive revisions later on.
4. Protecting reputation and trust
Law firms, corporations, and legal practitioners build their reputation on their ability to deliver accurate and reliable legal services. A poorly proofread document can undermine its credibility, causing clients to lose trust and seek representation elsewhere. On the other hand, a well-proofread document showcases professionalism and attention to detail, bolstering the trust between the legal professional and their clients.
5. Avoiding ambiguity
Ambiguity in legal documents can have far-reaching consequences. Unclear or vague language can lead to varying interpretations by different parties involved. By thoroughly proofreading the document, legal professionals can eliminate ambiguity and ensure that the document leaves no room for misinterpretation.
6. Consistency and uniformity
In complex legal cases or contracts, consistency and uniformity are essential to avoid potential contradictions within the document. Proofreading helps maintain a consistent tone, style, and format throughout the document, making it easier to navigate and comprehend.
7. Compliance with court rules
Court systems often have strict rules and guidelines for the formatting and presentation of legal documents. Legal proofreading ensures that the documents adhere to these rules, preventing any procedural delays or rejections.
8. Protection against legal malpractice
Legal malpractice claims can arise from errors or negligence in legal representation. By performing thorough proofreading, attorneys can minimize the risk of overlooking critical information or inaccuracies that could lead to malpractice claims.
9. Enhancing professionalism
Attention to detail is a hallmark of professionalism. Legal proofreading reflects a commitment to excellence and professionalism in the legal field. Lawyers who diligently proofread their work demonstrate a higher level of dedication to their clients and the pursuit of justice.
Legal proofreading is a meticulous process that safeguards the accuracy, credibility, and reliability of legal documents. Through legal proofreading, legal professionals uphold their reputation, build trust with clients, and avoid costly mistakes that can have severe consequences. As legal cases and documents continue to shape the course of society, investing time and effort into proper proofreading remains a crucial aspect of the legal profession.
